Idiopathic interstitial pneumonias are a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by inflammation and fibrosis of the parenchymal interstitial tissue. The cause is unknown, and some degree of airspace disease commonly accompanies the interstitial abnormality. They are classified into acute interstitial pneumonia (AIP), cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP), nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP), usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP), desquamative interstitial pneumonia (DIP), respiratory bronchiolitis–associated interstitial lung disease (RB-ILD), and lymphoid interstitial pneumonia (LIP)
